16th Edition Electrical Installation Certificate: What You Need to Know

British Standard BS 7671 "Requirements for Electrical Installations. IET Wiring Regulations", informally called in the UK electrical community "The Regs", is the national standard in the United Kingdom for electrical installation and the safety of electrical wiring in domestic, commercial, industrial, and other buildings, also in special installations and locations, such as marinas or caravan parks and medical locations[1]

In general, BS 7671 applies to circuits supplied at nominal voltages (Uo) up to and including 1000 volts AC or 1500 volts DC. The standard therefore covers the Extra Low Voltage (ELV) range (0-50V AC, 0-125V DC), and the Low Voltage (LV) range (50-1000V AC, 125-1500V DC). The frequencies covered for AC are 50 Hz, 60 Hz, and 400 Hz, used in the UK for houses, offices, and commerce. It did not become a recognized British Standard until the publication of the 16th edition in 1992. The standard takes account of the technical substance of agreements reached in CENELEC.[2]

16th Edition Electrical Installation Certificate

The 17th edition, released in January 2008 and amended in 2011 ("Amendment 1"), 2013 ("Amendment 2") and January 2015 ("Amendment 3") became effective for all installations designed after 1 July 2008.[6] One of the more significant changes is (chapter 41) that 30 mA RCDs will be required for socket outlets that are for use by ordinary persons and are intended for general use. This improves the level of protection against electrical shock in the UK to a level comparable to that in other EU countries. The 17th edition and its amendments incorporated new sections relating to microgeneration and solar photovoltaic systems, non-combustible consumer units, RCDs, and breakers (including high resilience breaker layout).

A separate form for inspection of an installation debuted in the Fourteenth Edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations, published in 1966. A completion certificate was intended for new installations or alterations, but for the first time, an inspection certificate was included, intended to be used for carrying out inspection and testing on an existing installation.

The Minor Works Electrical Installation Certificate (MEIWC) is the new kid on the block, with its first appearance in BS 7671:2001, the Sixteenth Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations. This certificate is intended to be used for minor electrical work that does not include the provision of a new circuit, for example, an additional socket-outlet to an existing circuit.

The 17th edition wiring regulations are the latest incarnation of a long line of wiring regulations published by the IET on a regular basis. By regular we mean every few years since it was first published in 1882. Before the 17th Edition every electrician needed to hold their 16th Edition and in a few years time it is likely that they will need to attain and be working to the 18th edition whenever it is released.

These are in essence the standard set for all UK electrical installations in domestic, commercial, industrial and other buildings. The wiring regulations simply put are a set of rules by which all electrical installations must comply.

They state things like where they apply (their scope), how the work should be installed and how to comply with the electricity at work regulations and other health and safety legislation. All new electrical installations in the UK must comply with the latest version of the wiring regulations and as such if you are installing electrics on a regular basis it is an absolute must that you are up to date with the latest version. Although the Wiring Regulations are non-statutory, they are referenced in several UK statutory documents and in most cases, for practical purposes, have legal force and can be used as defence in a court of law.

It is also important to note that the 17th Edition Wiring Regulations are also very useful for those working on the fringes of the electrical industry such as maintenance managers, engineers, project managers, architects and so on. For them the course may be harder to pass due to some of the technical jargon but can be invaluable to complement existing skills and give them an understanding of what is needed for electrical installations in a variety of situations.

Update courses are only required when a new edition is published. When the 17th Edition was first published there was a 1 day update course that helped you move from 16th to 17th Edition. However this has since been discontinued due to the number of amendments. We expect the same to be available when the 18th Edition does finally rear it head.

Top Sparks was started by managing director Nick Scanlon BSc (Hons) MIET, who has over 25 years experience in the electrical and security installation industry. His principle aim was to offer a professional service with the the highest standards of customer service - something which other companies consistantly fail to deliver.

The student must have prior knowledge or be an experienced electrician with existing and specific qualifications in electrical work (16th or 17th Electrical Edition qualification completed previously).

As the 18th Edition Electrical Installation course is an upgrade to the latest IET Wiring Regulations, it is essential that all candidates have either the 16th, 17th Edition behind them, or are apprentice trained electricians that are now working in the industry and wish to gain this certificate to progress in the workplace.

I left school in 1990 and went straight into an apprenticeship as a trainee electrician at an electrical contractors. I attended the Leeds college of Technology and achieved all the relevant City & Guilds qualifications.I have gone on to do further C&G courses in the Inspection, testing & certification of Electrical installations (2004) and when the electrical installation regulations (BS 7671) changed from the 16th edition to the 17th edition, them more recently the 18th edition, gaining certification in the new requirements. I have 23 years experience with a broad knowledge of electrical work, mainly domestic and light commercial.Chevin Electrical was established in 2006 just before the birth of my first child, I live in Guiseley with my family.I aim to offer a reliable honest service at a competitive rate.

AES Beijing Section held training course for listening testOn the morning of March 16th sponsored by Beijing Aisin Jufu Electronic Music Equipment Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Aixin Jufu) AES Beijing Section arranged the first "Listening Evaluation Experiment". This course was grandly held in Aisin Jufu's "AES Engineer Training Camp". The course is aimed at audio and sound engineers at home and abroad. The purpose is to cultivate the subjective and objective hearing of young audio engineers to achieve the most accurate evaluation of the sound. General Manager of Ai Xin Jufu Gao Aijun and Chair Wang Shusen, in order to provide professionalism and quality assurance, invited Professor Wang Zexiang from China Radio International, Liu Zili, a senior engineer of Beijing Electroacoustic Electric, and Professor Li Guoqi and Professor Lu Hongya from Beijing University of Technology. Most of the students are graduate students in Beijing, doctoral students, and young technical engineers in the audio industry. The students also injected fresh blood into the audio industry. The course is divided into six stages. On the morning of the 16th, the course was first guided by Section Chair Wang Shusen to outline the mission of the AES Society and the world-recognized international standards developed by AES. Introduce AES member organizations, AES research results, academic and engineering report presentations and training and training courses, and simply guide the end and begin formal teaching.Prof. Wang Zexiang introduced the five necessary conditions for sound quality listening evaluation and the standard evaluation term for listening evaluation, provided a standard program source for sound evaluation in the class. Liu Zili focused on the objective criteria of sound quality and the technical requirements of the listening environment and the listening electroacoustic system. In the audition process of playing the standard sound program source for the students, the two teachers told the methods and steps of the sound quality evaluation, and personally gave the students a sample score to let the students clearly experience the listening evaluation process. On the afternoon of the 16th, prof. Lu Hongyao outlined the historical evolution and development of "listening to the formation of hearing", and invited Mr. Li Guoqi to research and develop the software of the listening system of the "Shen ear" in China, and added functional innovations in the research for many years. In 2014, he produced and released the book "Shenfang" software and listening training system. During the audition training of the listening training, the students conducted a lot of contrast training on pure tone, pure tone volume, pure audio frequency, high harmonic components, audio high and low cut frequency and reverberation time. This kind of training requires a long period of practice accumulation, combined with the habits of Chinese audio engineers, to carry out systematic hearing improvement. Prof. Li Guoqi focused on reverberation time theory and auditory illusion and aesthetic experiment. These demonstration examples vividly explain the "magic power" of the sound, improve the artist's artistic and technical aesthetics, and increase the interaction with the students. On the morning of the 17th, prof. Wang Zexiang and Mr. Liu Zili focused on the electrical theory of audio, learned the knowledge of audio circuits, and the audio multi-meter bridge system, which clarified the various audio measurement units and theoretical concepts, and distinguished the VU and PPM tables. Use the difference to experience the effect of the phase on the sound and learn to use the phase correlation table to view the phase of the stereo audio signal. Under the guide of the two lecturers, the simulation of the listening evaluation process, the two pairs of audio equipment in Aixin Jufu "AES Engineer Training Camp" conducted an effective listening evaluation. On the afternoon of the 17th, Wang Shusen introduced the duties and research directions of the members of the AES, and introduced the professional English terminology of listening evaluation and the method of translating the English original text in the audio direction. It focuses on the ways and means of learning professional English in audio direction, and gives examples of audio professional English learning and translation methods, so that the professional audio English level of students can be greatly improved over a period of time. Afterwards, the general manager of Ai Xin Jufu Gao Aijun led the students to visit and experience the YAMAHA Nuage Nuendo 5.1.4 panoramic sound film and television mixing studio, and the general manager Gao Aijun briefly introduced the immersive film sound production process and the use of the overall system. Finally, Ai Xin Ju Fu Mr. Gao and AES Beijing Section Wang Shusen jointly issued a certificate of completion of the listening evaluation experiment course for the students, and wished the students to develop and progress in their studies and careers, and to create a higher level of research results for the Chinese audio industry. This course also fully explains the importance of listening training and listening evaluation. We hope that there will be more excellent courses for students and audio engineers in the future. 2ff7e9595c
